Drawdown Recovery Calculator

Enter a peak and a low (or a loss percentage) to see how deep the drawdown is and how much the price has to rise just to get back to where it was.

Gain needed to recover
–
Drawdown from peak
–
Multiple needed
–

How it is calculated

  • Drawdown = (1 − low ÷ peak) × 100
  • Gain needed = (peak ÷ low − 1) × 100, which is the same as 1 ÷ (1 − drawdown) − 1

Worked example

A coin that fell from 69,000 to 20,000.

You enter
Peak value or price69,000
Current or lowest value20,000
You get
Gain needed to recover245.0000%
Drawdown from peak71.0145%
Multiple needed3.45 ×

A 71.0145% fall needs a 245% rise (3.45×) just to get back to the peak.

Questions

Why does a 50% loss need a 100% gain?

After halving, every percentage gain is measured on the smaller amount. 100 falls to 50; getting back to 100 is a rise of 50 on 50, which is 100%.

Sources and checks

Your numbers never leave your device: the calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored.

Arithmetic only: it says nothing about whether a price will recover. This is not financial advice. Results are estimates for information only and are not financial, investment, tax or legal advice. Crypto prices move fast and leveraged trading can lose more than you expect. Check figures on your exchange or wallet before you act.
