How it is calculated

  • Size (vbytes) = overhead + inputs × input size + outputs × output size, rounded up to a whole vbyte
  • Native SegWit: overhead 10.5, input 68.25, output 31 · Taproot: overhead 10.5, input 57.75, output 43 · Legacy: overhead 10, input 148, output 34
  • Fee (sats) = size × fee rate; fee (BTC) = sats ÷ 100,000,000

Worked example

A typical payment from a native SegWit wallet: one input, a payment output and a change output, at 10 sat/vB.

You enter
Address typeNative SegWit (bc1q…)
Inputs1
Outputs2
Fee rate10 sat/vB
BTC price60,000
You get
Fee1,410 sats
Fee in BTC0.0000141 BTC
Fee in money0.85
Estimated size141 vB

A native SegWit transaction of about 141 vbytes costs 1,410 sats (0.0000141 BTC, about 0.85).

Questions

Why is native SegWit cheaper than legacy?

SegWit moves signature data into the witness, which counts as a quarter of a byte. A one-input, two-output payment is about 141 vB in native SegWit and about 226 vB in legacy.

Your numbers never leave your device: the calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored.

An estimate: real sizes vary slightly with signature length and script type, and multisig is not covered. Fee rates change by the minute; check a mempool site before sending. Crypto prices move fast and leveraged trading can lose more than you expect. Check figures on your exchange or wallet before you act.
